Costa Rica Sea Turtle Conservation Project

Our center in Costa Rica is located in the heart of the university district of the capitol San Jose. We will spend the first weekend in the center as we go through the orientation. Sunday afternoon we will transfer to our placement and prepare for work on Monday morning.

The group will be working in one of Costa Ricas National Parks on a sea-turtle conservation project. These projects were started to help combat poaching and have been a phenomenal success. When they started, poaching was at approximately 70%. However, as a result of having these stations that are largely staffed by volunteers, poaching has been reduced to less than 10%! Jobs include working in the hatchery, helping at the nesting site, collecting data and conducting beach patrols.

	My Lord Jesus Care's Daycare - Nursery Teacher My Lord Jesus Cares Day Care is a grass-root independent project that was started by one women. Upon conception, there were only 6 students attending the school, however, due to a rising interest there are now over 75 nursery children that attend each day. The reason why this organization requires volunteers is because they are understaffed. There is currently only one full-time teacher and therefore most of her time is spent managing the classroom as opposed to teaching. At Lord Jesus Care Daycare the students range between the age of 2 and 7 years. During these formative years, children require more one-on-one support, more guidance and often need to be reminded of the rules and instructions. Volunteers are to assist the teacher to organize the students, to provide one-on-one support, to help organize and implement lesson plans and give the children at the school a chance to practice their English skills. Volunteers are required to work at this organization because they are needed to help create a supportive environment that encourages children to learn. Volunteers are needed to work closely with Mrs. Amoah to develop new lessons, interactive games and activities that promote early childhood development.
